Thialoc

Divinities related with the rain

Thialoc

Aztecs, in farmer towns of polytheistic believes, were wishing that the sky started to rain to improve their harvests. To make it happen, they asked to their god, Thialoc, god of the waters which come from the sky, representing itself as a snake in the clouds of blue sky color, like their temples were decorated.
Thialoc was their most important god in Mexico. It was always featured by some specifics caracteristics:
  • He was wearing an object representing the gold, long and a snake shape. It represented rays and thunders accompanied by rain.
  • His clothes had painted stains that simulated rain drops.
  • His face was painted in a black or blue color.

Thialoc took four directions, located in the est of the universe, and each direction had differents types of rain.
From his paradise, the best water was coming. It was necessary for their life. People who died drowned, went to that place, where they had possibilities to have a better life.

Tláloc had two wives: Xochiqueztal goddess of the love of flowers and nature, and Matlacuéyetl "the green skirt", goddess of the waters. He had 4 children who were called tlaloques. They lived in 4 areas of the sky.

A Supreme Force of nature and the cosmos was attributed to different opposing forces, sometimes beneficial  and others disastrous to humans; Benefactor, sometimes destructive, sometimes descends to fertilize the land, germinate and grow crops, or send lightning bolts and storms destroying lakes, rivers and seas. So It was necessary to make offers and worship him to gain his favor. In his honor some ceremonies and rituals were performed; his most fervent petitioners being the farmers, fishermen and sailors.

The power of Divinity allows him to take any form, as well as be present in any part, and can become tangible to show himself to the population. This is part of the Dialectic of the Sacred, which is part of all religions.
